Everyone at one time or another has had a baking mishap or some type of dessert disaster just like my cake baking story. Please share what happened to you and how you were able, if you were able, to fix the situation? Share Your Story

Garlic brownies

When my daughter was celebrating her birthday in school, she asked me to make brownies to bring in to share with her classmates. I wanted them to be extra special so I bought walnut oil to use. As they were cooking, I smelled something weird and knew it wasn't chocolate that I was smelling. I looked at my bottle of walnut oil and discovered I had bought walnut oil with garlic flavor. It wasn't a total loss - my husband and dad ate quite a few. My daughter got a new garlic-free batch for her birthday treat.

Twice with the same Coffee Cake

I often make a sor cream coffee cake. It can be topped with fruit or just cinamon and sugar and other things I have not yet done. Once I realized after putting it in the pan that I had not added the sugar. As I had lined the pan with foil I was able to dump it back in the bowl and stir the sugar in. It was fine. It was fine. The second time I put very sweet cinnamon but not cinnamon and sugar on it and could not imagine why it was not being eaten til I tried it myself. Too late for rescue

Cut it up

I had a cake that partially stuck to the pan and came out in several large pieces. Instead of showing the whole (broken) cake to guests, I made individual servings. I put pieces of cake into bowls and scooped soy ice cream on top of them. Mmmmmm . . .

Croutons and Seasoned Bread Crumbs

I'm a gluten-free cook and do lots of experimenting. That means I have way too many baking disasters. It would almost be funny if the raw ingredients weren't so expensive. I make a lot of bread crumbs and croutons from said disasters- but how many bushels of bread crumbs can a cook use in a month or year- really! On the brighter sider, lots of birds hang around my kitchen door.

Made a different cake

I was making a tube cake, and picked up the pan by the center tube. Of course, batter went everywhere. And it was layered with streusel. Instead of trying to scrape everything back into the tube pan, I put it in a 9x13" pan and baked it. I've made it that way since!

Serve them to the family.

What a great idea! If my baking disasters taste good, but look bad, I just serve them to the kids. Letting them eat with their fingers seems to make even ugly baked goods taste good!

Butter

My lsat baking disaster was having whipped cream become butter. Never had that happen before and my solution was to start over with fresh cream.

An Unrisen Cake

I took a chocolate cake that didn't rise and pressed it flat and made bite-sized brownies out of it. They were such a hit, I was ashamed to admit how they came about!
