What Baking Traditions Did You Grow-Up With?

My mom and I always made the traditional sugar cookies and decorated them shortly before Christmas. We always put up two Christmas trees, and the one in our family room was always decorated with the sugar cookies, popcorn strands and candy canes. Every year I thought it was the most beautiful tree ever.

When my children were little, I continued the tradition, but I also added a wonderful Belgian waffle cookie that my husband's mother made (she was from Belgium).

How Are They Today? (If desired, share recipes here.)

My children are all older now, but they are all coming home for Christmas this year and hope to make both cookies. I've got some new cookie recipes I want to share with them, too. Who knows, they may add some new cookies for their traditions.

The other day I was looking through a box of treasures and came across a bag. When I opened it, I found all of my mom's old cookie cutters. My mom passed away 14 years ago, so it was like finding a little piece of her. I can't wait to share cookies with my kids made using Mom's cookie cutters!!!

Advice

  • Don't stress!! Holiday traditions are supposed to be fun and memory makers. If making cookies, big meals, etc., is not enjoyable, don't do it. Have fun, fun and more fun.
  • If there are children around, let them help and don't expect perfection. Nothing is better than a Christmas cookie decorated with two inches of icing and LOTS of decorations.
  • Have a Merry Christmas!
