My absolute favorite treats have that sweet-salty combination. Well, it couldn't get much better than this Salty-Sweet Kettle Corn recipe from Laura Childs' latest scrapbook mystery, Postcards from the Dead, published by Berkley Prime Crime.

I love reading fictional novels, but I don't have a lot of extra time to do it. So for me to spend the time reading a novel, it has to be made with a recipe composted with just the right ingredients. All of Laura Childs' mysteries are made with those ingredients. Postcards from the Dead is set in one of my favorite cities, New Orleans. To make it even more exciting, it takes place during Mardi Gras. (Mardi Gras is a huge celebration that lasts for a couple of weeks and ends on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday.) Add some endearing characters, throw in my favorite hobby (scrapbooking), top it with a juicy murder, and I'm in book-reading heaven.

To join me in book-reading heaven, get a copy of Postcards from the Dead, make a batch of this Salty-Sweet Kettle Corn, put your feet-up and begin the adventure.

Special thanks to Laura Childs for once again sharing a recipe from her latest novel.

How to Print this Recipe Without All of the Extra Stuff

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 4 minutes

Total Time: 9 minutes

Yield: 16 cups (4 quarts)

  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Heat the oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add the popcorn and sugar, giving it a quick stir, then cover immediately with the lid. Once the popcorn begins popping, shake your pan every few seconds for 3 to 4 minutes, until the popcorn slows down. Remove from the heat immediately (before the sugar caramelizes and sticks!) and pour into a large bowl. Sprinkle with salt and serve immediately.
