Loukoumades (loo-koo-MAH-thes) is the Greek version of a doughnut.

You’ll notice that a good portion of Greek desserts and other sweet treats are made with honey. Be sure to buy local honey when you can. It’s said that eating local honey helps build immunities against allergies.

These taste best served with strong coffee and a newspaper, the old-fashioned paper kind is best, but digital will do.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast

  • 1 cup lukewarm water, for the yeast

  • 5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • Warm water, as needed

  • 2 cups sugar

  • 1 cup honey

  • 1 cup water

  • Ground cinnamon, for garnish

  • 1 cup oil, more or less, for frying

Steps to Make It

  1. Clean off a space to place the freshly cooked doughnuts. Spread newspaper and paper towels over the top of it.

  2. Dissolve the yeast in 1 cup lukewarm water and let it set for 10 to 15 minutes.

  3. Sift the flour and salt together. Make a hole in the flour and pour in the yeast mixture.

  4. Combine the mixture gently while continuously adding more warm until a soft and sticky dough forms.

  5. Cover the dough with a clean, damp dishtowel.

  6. Allow the dough to double in size.

  7. Bring the sugar, honey, and 1 cup water to a boil and boil it for 6 minutes.

  8. Remove it from the high heat, but keep it warm.

  9. Heat oil in a deep fryer or in a deep skillet.

  10. Use a tablespoon measuring spoon to drop the batter into the hot oil.

  11. When the batter begins to float, and it is golden and puffy, remove it to drain on paper towels.

  12. Place the doughnuts on a serving platter. Lastly, pour the syrup over the hot doughnuts and sprinkle them with cinnamon.
