Sweet and savory flavored butters are easy-to-make and delicious additions to any meal. Our recipe for whipped orange butter takes very little time and can transform your breakfast classics into moist and comforting bites. Waffles, pancakes, French toast, bread, and all kinds of muffins and quick bread can be elevated with this sweet and vibrant butter. For this preparation, you need just three ingredients and 15 minutes, and can easily double the ingredients if you want to make more to keep in the fridge for other occasions. We choose orange, but the flavor can be easily swapped out for other citrus fruit like lime or grapefruit.

Whipped butter is regular butter that has extra air or has been injected and whipped with an inert gas—a stable gas that's nonreactive with its environment—to make it fluffier and more easily spreadable. Easily found in most supermarkets, whipped butters are preferred by many because of their texture, though be aware that if too cold it would be as hard as regular butter and thus in need of some time at room temperature to achieve an optimal spreadability. If pressed for time, use already whipped butter and add the rest of the ingredients; you'll have a flavored whipped butter in the blink of an eye.

Once you've mastered our recipe, it might be time to experiment with other ingredients, maintaining a balance in the amounts of sweetness you are adding to your butter. Use maple syrup, honey, agave, monk extract, or stevia for an alternative source of sweetness. Add finely chopped fruit like berries. Or use very fragrant fresh herbs such as basil or edible flowers like lavender to make innovative combinations. Be mindful that if adding fresh fruit or herbs, the butter might have less shelf life than butter without; in either case keep them in the fridge for a few days. For savory whipped butter, think of using powdered garlic, onions, or allium mixes, and herbs such as oregano, thyme, and rosemary for an earthy touch. Use our orange butter for breakfast and brunch spreads, but also smear it on your favorite sandwich bread to make a sweet and savory preparation for lunch or dinner. It's great combined with smoky cold cuts and creamy cheeses. Try a smoked turkey and Brie or smoked ham and Camembert with plenty of sweet whipped orange butter.
