Here's a wonderful mother-daughter movie sprinkled with budding romance for both and loaded with brilliantly decorated cakes. What could get any better than that?

This is a gem of a movie that you may have missed in the theater, but you simply can’t miss on DVD.

The Story

The main focus is on the relationship between a single mother Daphne Wilder played by Diane Keaton and the youngest of her three grown daughters Milly (Mandy Moore). Daphne is afraid that Milly won’t ever find her true soul mate, so she takes out an ad on an Internet dating service. After personally interviewing all of the respondents, Daphne finds the “perfect man” for her daughter. At the same time, Milly finds her own man and ends up dating both of them. Daphne can’t leave enough alone and is constantly pushing her choice for soul mate. Despite the occasional fierce conflicts, their mother-daughter bond of love is strong.

The Cakes

Whimsey Cakes are all the rage.

Apparently, these cakes taste good too.

Daphne and Milly operate a catering company. The most outstanding food items they make are cakes. These cakes could almost be listed as co-stars in the movie. They are some of the most elaborately decorated cakes I have ever seen. They are so creative that I don't know how anyone could cut into them. The first three cakes seen in the movie are wedding cakes. Of all of the wedding cakes, the first cake is what I would consider the most traditional. It has several layers decorated with flowers and iced with a fresh tangerine-flavored buttercream. The second cake is bright yellow with painted-on and icing-crafted flowers. The third wedding cake is quite elegant as each layer looks like a white rose bud about to open. My absolute favorite cake in the movie is the one at the end. It's a wedding cake also, but instead of the standard round cake layers, it has squares layers in the whimsey (uneven) design. Black and white fondant is used instead of a traditional frosting. The top and bottom layers are covered in black fondant decorated with white polka dots. The middle white layer has black polka dots. The entire cake is embellished with red icing roses which just make the cake pop (stand-out). All of the cakes in the movie were made by the Cake Divas. You can look on their website to see some of the other cakes they make.
