Chocolate Chips!

Back in the 1930s a woman named Ruth Wakefield would bake cookies for the guests at her New Bedford, Massachusetts inn. One day she decided to put small bits of a semi-sweet chocolate bar in her cookies with the idea that they would melt. Well, they didn't melt, but became softer and still held their shape. Everyone just loved the new cookies. The cookies became so popular that Ruth was able to make a deal with the chocolate maker, Nestlé. Nestlé would carry her recipe on the back wrapper of their semi-sweet chocolate bar. She in turn would get a lifetime's supply of chocolate. In 1939 Nestlé, wanting to make baking the cookies easier, came up with chocolate chips. Nestlé named the chips after Ruth's original cookie recipe and inn - Toll House Real Chocolate Morsels, and the rest is history.

We've come a long way from those original chocolate chips. Today Nestlé, and other companies, offer them in more than just the one form and flavor. You can purchase mini chips, larger chips, white chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, peanut butter chips, milk chocolate chips and more. The good thing about chips is that they can be substituted one kind or size for another. You might have to adjust your sugar when sweeter chips are used.
