It's that time of year where everyone is looking for something good to read. When you have the kids on your hands all summer like I have, my reading is restricted to light reading. Cookbooks are just perfect for that.

1. The Blue Willow Inn Bible of Southern Cooking

I finally made it to the Blue Willow Inn for lunch a couple of weeks ago. They've got a huge buffet with some great Southern dishes on it. The cookbook has most of the recipes for the dishes I ate there. What I really like about this cookbook is that it has a recipe for just about any Southern dish you desire like: Ambrosia, Fresh Ham, Creamed Potatoes, Fried Green Tomatos, Collard Greens and Yeast Rolls. Some of the desserts are for: Lane Cake, Feud Cake, Fresh Coconut Cake and many, many more.

2. The Dillard House Cookbook and Mountain Guide

Here's another cookbook from a famous Georiga restaurant. Not only do you get the great Southern recipes, but this book has tons of stories told by people who grew-up in the north Georiga mountains. It takes hours to read the entire book, but it can be done over time without losing interest.

3. Sensational Stevia Desserts

I'll admit it, I'm still making my way through this book. Until a few months ago, I had never even heard of Stevia (a sugar substitute). To me, one of the most interesting things about it is that it takes very little, like 1/4 of a teaspoon, to make an entire dessert. With Sensational Stevia Desserts, I'm learning a lot about the low carb aspect of dieting and the use of Stevia.

4. From Grouper to Grits

My in-laws have a house on Clearwater Beach, Florida. So it's a natural that I just had to buy this book from the Junior League of Clearwater-Dunedin. It's got recipes from some of our favorite restaurants like Frenchy's.

5. Cooking with Mickey

Loretta just had to celebrate her birthday at EPCOT this year. I just had to buy two of their cookbooks. If you eat in some of the really nice restaurants anywhere in Disney (even on their cruise ships), you'll want some of their recipes. For years, I've wanted their recipe for Tonga Toast (Banana-stuffed French Toast) that's served at the Polynesian. There are several versions of these books. This is just one of them.

6. The Lost Art of Pie Making Made Easy

I picked-up this little book at the Mast General Store in Hendersonville, North Carolina. It's a little pamplet cookbook filled with a wealth of information on pie making. A lot of it has to do with getting over your fear of making them.

7. The Ultimate Frozen Dessert Book

Bruce Weinstein offers us another outstanding The Ultimate* cookbook. If you ever wanted to know the difference between ice cream, gelatos, sherbets, granitas semifreddos, the answer is in here. It was thrilling to find recipes for both of my childhood favorites: Tortoni and Spumoni.

The Ultimate Books in Ice Cream, Peanut Butter, Chocolate Cookies, Muffins and more.

9. Chocolates and Candies to Make

The step-by-step photos and drawings in this cookbook aimed at kids are what appealed to me. You can make things like chocolate bugs (lady bugs) and peppermint creams. Not only do you get the recipes but they offer inventive ways to wrap them for gift giving.

Note to parents, grandparents and friends to kids - Usborne Books make the best kid gifts.
