Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup margarine or butter, softened
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups chopped pared apples (about 2 medium)
  • ---Granola Streusel---
  • 1 cup granola
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cold butter

Preparation:

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare Granola Streusel by using a pastry blender to combine the butter and flour until combined and looks like small peas. Stir in rest of streusel ingredients. Set aside. Beat first set of ingredients except apples in large bowl on low speed, scraping bowl frequently, 30 seconds. Beat on medium speed, scraping bowl occasionally, 2 minutes. Stir in apples. Spread half of the batter in greased 9x9x2 inch square pan; sprinkle with half of the Granola Streusel. Top with remaining batter; sprinkle with remaining Granola Streusel. Bake Danish for 20-25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

This is virtually the same recipe that I found in college 35 years ago on a box of granola. I made it every year at Thanksgiving for about 20+ years then I lost the recipe. I'm glad I found this again. The only difference is my recipe had the remainder of the box of granola added to the dough and therefore takes about 40-45 minutes to bake. The prep and bake time you listed were a bit off. Prep is more like 45-60 minutes because you have to peel & chop apples, chop nuts a bit finer, soften butter, read the directions, measure and sift everything, etc. Longer if you have kids help out. Baking time without extra granola was 25-30 min (not 20) for dry toothpick and with extra granola in dough, it was 45-50 mins. Definitely delicious. Good alternative to apples is various berry mixtures. We did one with strawberries & blackberries. Yum!
