Sherbet
Dateline: 07/27/99
I don't know where you live, but where I am the temperature is in the high 90's F with a heat index of 110 F. This is the perfect time to make this wondrous, frozen dessert.
Of all of the frozen desserts (ice cream, sorbet and sherbet), sherbet is almost forgotten. Ice cream is the most readily available, and comes in so many flavors. Sorbets have become the most trendy desserts. I believe this is due the facts that wine is used in many sorbets and that they are totally fatfree. Sorbets are very easy to make, also. Sherbet is not as popular. It is a frozen, fruit flavored dessert made with milk, light creams, or even egg whites for volume. In the grocery store, you can usually only find these flavors: lime, orange, and pineapple.
I have fond childhood memories of eating sherbet. Whenever I was sick, Mom would get me three things: poached eggs on toast, ginger ale, and lime sherbet. Those are my comfort foods. Even though my mom isn't around anymore, I still get them. Whenever I am sick, my husband makes me the eggs, and then runs to the store for ginger ale and lime sherbet.
I hope you can beat the heat with one of these wonderful frozen desserts.
Enjoy!
