Butter seems like such a simple ingredient, yet it can be improved and enhanced to create custom butter flavors. This recipe is for a sweet, whipped butter with brown sugar and it is a pure delight for many types of bread.

Flavored butters are known as compound butters in the culinary world and they're extremely easy to make. The trick is to allow your butter to reach room temperature so it becomes nice and soft. From there, it's as simple as whipping the ingredients with your electric mixer until the butter is creamy.

This brown sugar butter recipe adds more cream to the butter. It can be heavy cream, milk, or anything in between. Because it's just a couple of tablespoons, feel free to use the dairy option you have in the fridge. There's no need to buy a specific cream just for this recipe if you're not going to use the rest of it.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, softened

  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream, or milk

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar, packed

Steps to Make It

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. After the butter has softened to room temperature, place it in a small mixing bowl.

  3. Add the cream or milk and the brown sugar.

  4. Begin beating the butter with your mixer on a slow speed and build up to a faster speed. Whip the butter until it is nice and creamy.

  5. Keep the butter in a covered bowl or plastic container. Store in the refrigerator when not in use.

Using Your Brown Sugar Butter

The finished brown sugar butter is light and sweet and once you taste it, you'll want to add it to almost everything. It tastes great on white bread as well as heavy grain bread and works well with dinner. Sweetbreads, muffins, pancakes, and waffles can also be enhanced with it.

Pair it with other bread spreads as well. It's fantastic with raspberry jam, orange marmalade, and many other fruit spreads.
